What happens to the electrical when equipment moves?

Every machine, rack or panel has power wired to it, and that wiring rarely reaches the new location. We disconnect the equipment safely, move or extend the circuits, reconnect it and confirm it runs correctly. Here is the order we follow:

  1. Confirm the new location can supply what the equipment needs: voltage, phase and amperage
  2. De-energize and lock out the circuit before anyone touches the equipment
  3. Disconnect and label the conductors so nothing gets reconnected wrong
  4. Relocate disconnects and conduit, then extend or replace conductors, with any splices made in accessible boxes
  5. Reconnect, check motor rotation on three-phase equipment and test
  6. Update the panel schedule so it matches what is actually connected

What equipment do we relocate?

  • Production machinery, compressors and pumps
  • Kitchen and lab equipment
  • Server and network racks
  • Panels, disconnects and subpanels

Moving a panel is a larger job than moving a machine, because every circuit it serves has to be rerouted. We scope it separately.

What goes wrong when equipment moves without a plan?

  • The new circuit is undersized for the equipment
  • A three-phase motor spins backward because two conductors were swapped
  • Equipment ends up without the clear working space the NEC requires in front of electrical gear, which is generally at least 3 feet deep and 30 inches wide
  • Extension cords and temporary wiring become permanent
  • The panel schedule no longer matches the building, so the next electrician is working blind

If you are moving a lot of equipment into a space and are not sure the power will keep up, a load study can show how much margin the panel really has. Adding new circuits is covered under branch circuit installation.

OUR PROCESS

HOW DOES A JOB WITH PHOENIX CONTRACTING SERVICES WORK?

Every job follows three steps: a site walkthrough, testing and documentation, then findings and next steps.

01

WALKTHROUGH AND SCOPE

We start with a free phone consultation, and you can send a photo of your panel or equipment. If on-site work is needed, we visit, look at the panels and service, and agree on what needs to be tested or repaired before any work starts. On-site work is quoted before it begins.

02

TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION

Load loggers and a thermal camera record what the equipment is doing, and the results are documented for each panel or component we check.

03

FINDINGS AND NEXT STEPS

We go over what we found and your options in plain language. If corrective work is needed, we are licensed to do it.

WHAT CUSTOMERS SAY ABOUT US

5.0 VERIFIED GOOGLE RATING
It actually started in Fall 2020 with my Garage losing power. I bid out the work and hired Phoenix Contracting Services. The following Monday, Jeff and his crew (Mike and Gabriel) came out and finally resolved the issue See more
Jeff’s knowledge, experience and professionalism are exemplary! We contracted him to provide engineering plans to permit our relocation and upgrade of electrical service meter. He worked with my electricians on details See more
We woke to a Friday morning with weird lighting fluctuations. I checked the service panel to find a burning smell and melted bus bar under AC breaker. Since bus bar was melted, I contacted SRP who provided some certified See more

How much downtime will a relocation cause?
It depends on the equipment and the distance. We plan the move around your hours and keep the time without power as short as we can.
Can you move a panel?
Yes. It is a bigger job than moving a machine because the circuits it serves must be rerouted. We scope and permit it as its own project.
Do I need new circuits at the new location?
Sometimes. If the new location already has a circuit that matches the equipment, we may be able to use it. Otherwise we install a new one.
Do you coordinate with riggers and movers?
Yes. We disconnect before they move the equipment and reconnect after, and we work with them on timing.
Does an equipment relocation need a permit?
If we modify wiring, many Phoenix-area cities require a permit. We confirm your city's requirement before work starts.
