What is electrical infrared thermography?

Infrared thermography uses a thermal camera to find hot spots in energized electrical equipment, such as loose connections, overloaded circuits and failing breakers, before they cause an outage or damage. A bad connection adds resistance, and resistance makes heat, so a thermal image shows trouble that looks normal to the eye.

Phoenix Contracting Services scans panels, switchgear, breakers, disconnects and service equipment at commercial and industrial facilities across the Phoenix area. We scan while the equipment is running under a normal load, because that is when problems show up.

What problems can a thermal scan find?

  • Loose or high-resistance connections

Resistance makes heat, so a loose lug or termination shows up as a hot spot.

  • Overloaded circuits

Conductors and breakers carrying too much current run warmer than their neighbors.

  • Phase imbalance

One phase carrying more than its share shows up as uneven heat across a panel.

  • Failing breakers

A breaker running hotter than identical ones beside it deserves a closer look.

  • Hot bus and lug connections

Heat at bus bars and lugs can signal a connection that is degrading.

  • Worn components in panels and switchgear

Aging parts often run warm well before they fail.

How does an infrared scan work?

  1. 01

    Scope the equipment

We list the panels, switchgear and service equipment to scan, check access and schedule the scan around your operations.

  2. 02

    Scan under load

A qualified electrician exposes the connections where it is safe and scans the equipment while it is energized and carrying a normal load. Every hot spot gets a thermal image and a regular photo.

  3. 03

    Report and next steps

You get a written report with the findings and what to do about them. If corrective work is needed, we are licensed to do it.

What is in a thermography report?

  • A thermal image and a regular photo of every hot spot
  • The equipment and location of each finding
  • Measured temperatures compared with similar components
  • The likely cause, such as a loose connection or overload
  • Recommended action and priority
  • A baseline you can compare against at the next scan

When is the best time to scan in Phoenix?

Scan when the equipment is working hard. In Phoenix that is usually summer, when cooling equipment pushes electrical loads to their yearly peak. A connection that looks fine in January can run hot in July, so a summer scan is often the most revealing. We can scan any time of year as long as the equipment is energized and carrying a normal load, and we schedule around your operations.

What equipment and properties do you scan?

We scan panels, switchgear, breakers and service equipment from Square D, Siemens, Cutler Hammer, Eaton, Westinghouse, Crouse Hinds, Murray, Zinsco and Federal Pacific. Our work covers offices, warehouses, retail, data centers, manufacturing plants and multifamily buildings, plus larger residential projects. See our commercial electrical services and industrial electrical services.

Does thermography support maintenance records and facility documentation?

Infrared thermography is a common part of electrical preventive maintenance, and a scan report documents the condition of your equipment for maintenance records. Facility managers, plant managers and auditors often ask for that documentation, and requirements vary by site, so check what yours needs. We can scan once or help you set up a repeat schedule. Our scans follow NFPA 70E safe work practices; see NFPA 70E electrical safety.

Can Phoenix Contracting Services fix what the scan finds?

Yes. We are a licensed Arizona electrical contractor (ROC #153656), so if a scan finds a loose connection, a failing breaker or an overloaded panel, we can make the repair. See breaker replacement, electrical panel upgrades and service upgrades.

If the heat points to overload, a load study shows whether the system has enough capacity. See electrical load studies.

OUR PROCESS

HOW DOES A JOB WITH PHOENIX CONTRACTING SERVICES WORK?

Every job follows three steps: a site walkthrough, testing and documentation, then findings and next steps.

01

WALKTHROUGH AND SCOPE

We start with a free phone consultation, and you can send a photo of your panel or equipment. If on-site work is needed, we visit, look at the panels and service, and agree on what needs to be tested or repaired before any work starts. On-site work is quoted before it begins.

02

TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION

Load loggers and a thermal camera record what the equipment is doing, and the results are documented for each panel or component we check.

03

FINDINGS AND NEXT STEPS

We go over what we found and your options in plain language. If corrective work is needed, we are licensed to do it.

A Few Common Questions

Make The Next Step Easier

What types of properties do you service?
We service commercial, industrial, multifamily and residential properties in the Phoenix area, including offices, warehouses, retail spaces, data centers and larger electrical projects. Our specialty is load studies and infrared thermography for commercial and industrial facilities.
Do you offer electrical load studies?
Yes. A load study records how much power a panel or service actually uses, typically over 30 days, with calibrated Fluke power quality loggers. The results show whether the system can handle new equipment, support a panel upgrade or explain a power quality problem.
How much does an electrical load study cost?
The price depends on how many panels or services are monitored, how long the monitoring runs, and whether the study supports a permit request. We quote after we know the scope. Call (602) 564-1144 or request a consultation with a short description of the building.
How does infrared thermography help?
Infrared thermography uses a thermal camera to find hot spots in energized equipment, such as loose connections, overloaded circuits and failing breakers, before they cause an outage or damage. These problems often look normal during a standard visual inspection. Scans are usually done while the equipment runs under normal load.
Can you help with electrical panel upgrades?
Yes. We replace overloaded or outdated panels and upgrade electrical service when breakers trip repeatedly, a panel runs warm or you are adding equipment. A load study can show the capacity you need before you buy new gear. See our panel upgrade services.
Do you provide emergency electrical service?
Yes. Call (602) 564-1144 for power loss, a main breaker that will not reset, burning smells or a damaged panel. If you see smoke, flames or sparks, \1 We offer a same-day assessment, then deploy resources as needed. Learn more about our emergency electrical services.
Do you follow NFPA 70E on the job?
Yes. Jeff Finley is NFPA 70E certified, and our crews follow NFPA 70E on every job. We also gather field data for engineers' arc flash studies and install the labels they provide. See our NFPA 70E electrical safety page.
Do you handle residential electrical repairs too?
Yes. Residential service includes inspections, repairs, outlet and lighting work, GFCI and AFCI protection, aluminum wire repair and troubleshooting. See our residential electrical services.
Are you licensed in Arizona?
Yes. Phoenix Contracting Services holds Arizona Registrar of Contractors license #153656 and has more than 40 years in business. Jeff Finley is FLIR Level 1 certified in infrared thermography and NFPA 70E certified.
What areas do you serve?
We serve Phoenix and nearby cities, including Anthem, Cave Creek, Glendale, Peoria, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, Goodyear, Buckeye, Tempe, Gilbert and Surprise. See all service areas.
How do I get started?
Call (602) 564-1144 or use the Request a Consultation button with a short description of the issue or project. We will tell you whether it calls for a site visit, a load study or a thermal scan, and what comes next. The first phone consultation is free, and you can send a photo of your panel or equipment. On-site work is quoted before it starts.
