What is NFPA 70E?

NFPA 70E is the standard for electrical safety in the workplace. It covers how to protect people who work on or near electrical equipment. Jeff Finley, owner and president of Phoenix Contracting Services, is NFPA 70E certified.

What NFPA 70E covers

  • Safe work procedures. Putting equipment in an electrically safe condition before work starts: lockout/tagout and verifying that voltage is absent.
  • Risk assessments. Identifying shock and arc flash hazards before work begins, so the right precautions are chosen.
  • Energized work. When working on live equipment is justified, and the precautions required when it cannot be avoided.
  • Worker protection. Training, shock and arc flash approach boundaries, insulated tools and the right PPE.
  • Safety programs and maintenance. Employer procedures, and equipment kept in good condition, that support safe work.

How our crews work on your site

Our crews follow NFPA 70E on every job. This is how we work safely at your facility, and it is built into every visit rather than offered as a separate service.

  • A job briefing before work starts, so everyone knows the plan and the hazards
  • Equipment put in an electrically safe work condition: lockout/tagout, then verifying absence of voltage
  • Shock and arc flash approach boundaries respected
  • Insulated tools
  • The right PPE for the task

Arc flash field data and labels

An engineer performs the arc flash study and the incident-energy calculations. We help in two ways:

  • Field data. We gather as-built information on site, such as equipment, conductors, nameplate data and one-line diagrams, so the engineer can complete the study. It is the same kind of field work we do for electrical load studies, where we work with engineers regularly.
  • Labels. We install the arc flash warning labels the engineer provides, and we install updated labels after equipment changes.

Who we work with

Facility managers, plant managers and the engineers who support them. If your site has an engineer working on an arc flash study, tell us when you call, and see electrical load studies for how we support engineers with field data.

OUR PROCESS

HOW DOES A JOB WITH PHOENIX CONTRACTING SERVICES WORK?

Every job follows three steps: a site walkthrough, testing and documentation, then findings and next steps.

01

WALKTHROUGH AND SCOPE

We start with a free phone consultation, and you can send a photo of your panel or equipment. If on-site work is needed, we visit, look at the panels and service, and agree on what needs to be tested or repaired before any work starts. On-site work is quoted before it begins.

02

TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION

Load loggers and a thermal camera record what the equipment is doing, and the results are documented for each panel or component we check.

03

FINDINGS AND NEXT STEPS

We go over what we found and your options in plain language. If corrective work is needed, we are licensed to do it.

WHAT CUSTOMERS SAY ABOUT US

5.0 VERIFIED GOOGLE RATING
It actually started in Fall 2020 with my Garage losing power. I bid out the work and hired Phoenix Contracting Services. The following Monday, Jeff and his crew (Mike and Gabriel) came out and finally resolved the issue See more
Jeff’s knowledge, experience and professionalism are exemplary! We contracted him to provide engineering plans to permit our relocation and upgrade of electrical service meter. He worked with my electricians on details See more
We woke to a Friday morning with weird lighting fluctuations. I checked the service panel to find a burning smell and melted bus bar under AC breaker. Since bus bar was melted, I contacted SRP who provided some certified See more
