Why measure a warehouse or plant instead of calculating it?

Industrial loads do not run on a schedule. Compressors cycle, forklift chargers stack up at shift change and dock equipment runs in bursts. Nameplate math adds all of that together as if it ran at once, which overstates the real peak. Recording the actual demand shows what happens in a normal week and on the worst day.

What do we measure?

  • Main service and main distribution panel load
  • Motor control centers and large equipment feeders
  • Forklift and battery charging banks
  • Compressor and pump starting current
  • Voltage, power factor and phase balance at the main

What projects call for it?

  • Adding racking, dock doors or a mezzanine
  • Installing new production lines or automation
  • Adding EV or forklift charging
  • Responding to nuisance trips or voltage sags when equipment starts
  • Preparing a utility service upgrade request with APS or SRP

What does the report give you?

You get the measured peak, when it happened, which areas drive it and how much margin is left on the main service and key panels. If the numbers show that the building is near its limit, the report recommends the smallest change that solves it, whether that is staggering loads, adding a panel or upgrading the service.

We assist engineers with load calculations and supply the field data.

How do we work around production?

Recording instruments clamp onto conductors and need only brief access to panels, so production keeps running. We schedule any shutdown for a time that suits your operation. Heat, dust and equipment hours are part of the walk-through. For the safe work practices we follow around live equipment, see NFPA 70E electrical safety. The overall service is on our Electrical Load Studies page.

OUR PROCESS

HOW DOES A JOB WITH PHOENIX CONTRACTING SERVICES WORK?

Every job follows three steps: a site walkthrough, testing and documentation, then findings and next steps.

01

WALKTHROUGH AND SCOPE

We start with a free phone consultation, and you can send a photo of your panel or equipment. If on-site work is needed, we visit, look at the panels and service, and agree on what needs to be tested or repaired before any work starts. On-site work is quoted before it begins.

02

TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION

Load loggers and a thermal camera record what the equipment is doing, and the results are documented for each panel or component we check.

03

FINDINGS AND NEXT STEPS

We go over what we found and your options in plain language. If corrective work is needed, we are licensed to do it.

WHAT CUSTOMERS SAY ABOUT US

5.0 VERIFIED GOOGLE RATING
Jeff and his team were amazing! I needed a load calculation, one line diagram, and a panel schedule for an electrical permit with the city. Phoenix Contracting Services had an unbeatable price and moved quickly to See more
Jeff’s knowledge, experience and professionalism are exemplary! We contracted him to provide engineering plans to permit our relocation and upgrade of electrical service meter. He worked with my electricians on details See more
We woke to a Friday morning with weird lighting fluctuations. I checked the service panel to find a burning smell and melted bus bar under AC breaker. Since bus bar was melted, I contacted SRP who provided some certified See more

Do you need to shut down production?
No for recording. We clamp instruments onto the conductors. A brief outage may be needed at a panel for certain connections, and we schedule it with you.
How long should we record?
Long enough to include your busiest week. For code-based documentation the usual minimum is 30 days.
Can you capture motor starting current?
Yes. The instruments record fast events, including starting inrush, so you can see the impact on voltage.
Will the study help with a utility upgrade request?
Yes. Measured demand is the evidence APS or SRP needs to see before sizing a service change.
Do you work with our engineer?
Yes. We supply the field data and assist engineers with load calculations.
