What does a transformer installation include?

A transformer installation is more than setting the unit. We size it, protect it, ground it and give it room to breathe. Most commercial jobs use a dry-type transformer to step a building's 480 volt supply down to 208Y/120 volts for outlets, lighting and smaller equipment.

  • Sizing in kVA from the load the transformer will serve
  • Overcurrent protection and disconnects on the primary and secondary side, as NEC Article 450 requires
  • Mounting on the floor, wall or a trapeze, with the required clearances
  • Primary and secondary conductors sized for the load
  • Grounding and bonding of the secondary, which creates a separately derived system (see bonding and grounding)
  • Testing, energizing and labeling

How do you size a transformer?

Start with the connected load, apply the demand and continuous-load rules, and leave room for what you plan to add. An undersized transformer runs hot and wears out early. A badly oversized one costs more and can run less efficiently. Measured data from a load study takes the guessing out of the number.

Why does Phoenix heat matter for a transformer?

Transformers shed heat into the room around them. Put one in a closed mechanical room, an attic or a sun-baked wall in July and the surrounding air is already well over 100 degrees before the unit does any work. We plan the location, clearance and ventilation with that in mind. After installation, infrared thermography can confirm the connections and the unit are running at normal temperature.

When do you need a K-rated transformer?

Loads built from electronics, such as LED drivers, variable frequency drives and computers, create harmonic currents that heat a standard transformer more than its nameplate suggests. A K-rated unit is built to handle that. Power monitoring can measure the harmonic content before you choose.

What about utility transformers?

Pad-mounted and pole-mounted transformers on the utility side belong to APS or SRP. We handle the customer side: dry-type units inside your building, the protection and conductors around them, and coordination when the utility's equipment is involved.

OUR PROCESS

HOW DOES A JOB WITH PHOENIX CONTRACTING SERVICES WORK?

Every job follows three steps: a site walkthrough, testing and documentation, then findings and next steps.

01

WALKTHROUGH AND SCOPE

We start with a free phone consultation, and you can send a photo of your panel or equipment. If on-site work is needed, we visit, look at the panels and service, and agree on what needs to be tested or repaired before any work starts. On-site work is quoted before it begins.

02

TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION

Load loggers and a thermal camera record what the equipment is doing, and the results are documented for each panel or component we check.

03

FINDINGS AND NEXT STEPS

We go over what we found and your options in plain language. If corrective work is needed, we are licensed to do it.

WHAT CUSTOMERS SAY ABOUT US

5.0 VERIFIED GOOGLE RATING
It actually started in Fall 2020 with my Garage losing power. I bid out the work and hired Phoenix Contracting Services. The following Monday, Jeff and his crew (Mike and Gabriel) came out and finally resolved the issue See more
Jeff’s knowledge, experience and professionalism are exemplary! We contracted him to provide engineering plans to permit our relocation and upgrade of electrical service meter. He worked with my electricians on details See more
We woke to a Friday morning with weird lighting fluctuations. I checked the service panel to find a burning smell and melted bus bar under AC breaker. Since bus bar was melted, I contacted SRP who provided some certified See more

What size transformer do I need?
It depends on the connected load, the voltage in and out and how much growth you expect. We size it from calculated or measured load, not from the old unit's nameplate.
Why does my transformer hum?
A steady low hum is normal. A loud or changing hum can point to a loose mounting, an overloaded unit or harmonic load, and it is worth having checked.
Can you replace an old transformer?
Yes. We check what the old unit was serving, whether the load has changed and whether the protection and conductors still match the new size.
Does a transformer installation need a permit?
In most Phoenix-area cities it does, along with an inspection. We handle that process when we quote the job.
Can a transformer go outdoors?
Only if it is rated for outdoor use or housed in a suitable enclosure. Location also needs to meet clearance and access rules.
